Carbon Zero
Climate change is an unfortunate reality that we all must learn to take action in order to mitigate and adapt. MWPT helps offset our human carbon emissions by planting and caring for native trees and plants in our community. Plants are natural carbon sinks, meaning that they take carbon dioxide, one of the leading greenhouse gases, and turns it into plant structures like leaves, flowers, bark, and roots, through photosynthesis. By replanting trees, shrubs, bushes, and other native vegetation, and battling invasive vines that attempt to overtake the natural native landscape, we do our part to support healthy ecosystems and habitat.
Our neighborhood has a large tree canopy that is distinctly Mount Washington and unique within the city of Baltimore. Our trees give more than oxygen. Our native trees filter water and slow erosion, helping the Western Run watershed, a part of the Jones Falls and Chesapeake Bay watershed. Our trees feed an abundance of native life from bugs to birds, to small mammals, and further up the food web. Our trees capture solar energy and convert it to organic chemical energy for our planet.
So much goes into our drive for achieving a net-zero carbon - or even a carbon-negative - footprint. MWPT is leading the way for our residents and neighbors of Mount Washington. We work together to make our community sustainable.
